Thanks to César Chávez, criminal defense lawyers have no DUI appearances or trials in the San Diego Superior Court.

Today’s holiday also means attorneys have no California DMV administrative per se hearings. Both the court and DMV are closed.

Today’s César Chávez Day is a state holiday in 8 US states.

For many good reasons, Chávez is the best known Latino civil rights activist.

César Chávez’ public-relations approach to unionism and aggressive but nonviolent tactics made the farm workers’ struggle a moral cause with nationwide support.

César Chávez’ tactics forced growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining agent for 50,000 field workers in California and Florida.

César Chávez was known as a true rhetorical genius:

“Make a solemn promise: to enjoy our rightful part of the riches of this land, to throw off the yoke of being considered as agricultural implements or slaves. We are free men and we demand justice.”

“Sí, se puede” (Spanish for “Yes, it is possible” or, roughly, “Yes, it can be done”).

César Chávez’ work led to numerous improvements for union laborers.

Last Friday there was a demonstration in L.A. They do not want the same thing to happen in California as in Wisconsin.
