MADD calls for Senate Public Safety Committee to Hold Ignition Interlock Hearing on Drunk Driving Legislation

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is urging Sen. Gloria Romero (D-Los Angeles) and the Public Safety Committee to hold a hearing on the merits of requiring all convicted drunk drivers to use an ignition interlock device. MADD is also calling on members of the committee to restore the original language of AB 2784 in order to save lives and prevent thousands of needless injuries due to drunk driving.

According to MADD, every time they leave their driveway, Californians are sharing the road with 310,971 convicted drunk drivers with three or more DUI convictions. Drunk driving is the nation’s most frequently committed violent crime – resulting in 1,276 deaths and over 270,000 DUI-related injuries in California alone in 2006. Research shows that alcohol ignition interlocks on the vehicles of all convicted drunk drivers significantly reduces deaths and injuries due to drunk driving.

MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving calls for intensive high-visibility law enforcement and full implementation of alcohol ignition interlocks.
