Another 167 people were injured in alcohol-related wrecks that day.
With stepped-up enforcement, the CHP is hoping to slash those numbers this Super Bowl Sunday.
“We’re not discouraging the celebration,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow, in a press release. “We’re asking fans to make the right call, so they won’t find themselves benched in a jail cell.”
The CHP, along with local police and sheriff’s stations, will be deploying DUI patrols as part of a campaign to lower alcohol-related deaths and injuries.
CHP officers across California arrested 403 drivers for driving under the influence last Super Bowl Sunday.
The agency is asking the public to call 911 to report suspected drunken drivers this Sunday. Callers should be prepared to give a description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel.
The California Highway Patrol is urging Super Bowl celebrants to include a designated non-drinking driver in their Super Bowl Sunday plans.
Last year on Super Bowl Sunday,

CHP officers statewide arrested

This year the CHP, along with police and sheriff’s departments, will deploy special DUI patrols through the statewide Avoid Campaign to lower alcohol-involved deaths and injuries.

In addition to designating a driver, the CHP encourages motorists to wear their seat belts and comply with the speed limit.
